Arusha-based solar company Off Grid Electric (OGE) has won the prestigious Zayed Future Energy Prize for its work in bringing electricity to power-starved areas of Tanzania. In a world where one in five people live without electricity,Off Grid Electric provide clean, transformative energy to households that suffer from expensive, unreliable grids or have no grid access at all. The company’s services are non-exclusive, meaning everyone in the household benefits – male and female, young and old. Off Grid Electric are currently lighting the homes of over 50,000 people per month, and that number is only increasing.
Off Grid Electric combines innovations from the electric vehicle industry and large scale solar to create modular systems that meet customers’ unique energy needs. These proprietary hardware platforms are designed to enable easy upgrades, ensuring the forefront of energy technology is always in the customers’ homes. The achievement has made Tanzania second African country to win global award.
The United Arab Emirates ambassador to Tanzania Abdullah Ibrahim Ghanem Sultan Al-Suwaidi honoured OGE at a recent event for winning the prize in the Small- to Medium-Sized Enterprise category.
Off Grid Electric, based in San Francisco, California and Arusha, Tanzania, is currently installing solar power in over 10,000 new homes and businesses per month.
